Mathematics tutor for primary & secondary students

I am a fully-qualified mathematics teacher, registered to teach Primary & Secondary in the UK and Ireland. I am also a Profesor Titulado de Matemáticas in Spain, with 10+ years of classroom teaching experience in the UK and Spain.

I previously worked at Oak House, an international school in Sarrià, Barcelona for four years as a teacher of mathematics in Year 7 and IB.

I am a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide in 2024, with a postgraduate in Mathematics Education from the University of Chichester, UK.

I offer online tutoring for students wishing to improve their mathematical abilities. I have previously taught maths for the International Baccalaureate, A-Levels, GCSE, SATs, ESO, Bachillerato, and the Irish Junior and Leaving Certificate.

Each class is accompanied by a Daily Practice sheet, giving students 5 to 10 minutes of tailored practice for the days between each class.

I mark and return this sheet to the student, and we spend time in the next class discussing what went well and how they can improve.

Classes are available each week for €45 per hour.

To allow sufficient time for good progress, many students opt for one 1.5 hour class for €65.

We will not just discuss mathematics – I will also spend time on motivation, routines, thinking styles, and efficiency with the student.

My approach is very much student-led – a typical class will begin by asking the student to explain what they know about a specific topic.

We will fill in the gaps in the student’s understanding, and once the concept has been understood, we will spend the remainder of the class practising questions.

I bring the student’s understanding of a topic to one level above what they might need to achieve success in their year-group, to ensure that they feel comfortable with school exams.

I use an iPad & pen and specialised software called Bitpaper for the classes. The student does not need any specialised equipment, but an iPad and pen can make the student’s experience completely seamless.

We share a whiteboard where we can both draw and write on, as if we were sitting next to each other sharing a piece of paper, with an integrated video call too.

You can communicate with me in English, Spanish or Catalan by sending a mail to hello@mathswithderek.com.

We can discuss your child’s specific needs and tailor a plan that suits them and their schedule.

For students in Spain, I can also help with the Spanish mathematics curriculum (for example, with students in ESO or Bachillerato), although the classes will be in English.
